Transport

The scooter is a popular way to see the sights; however bikes, cars and jeeps are also available from local rental agencies. The "Island Bus" offers a convenient, low cost method of transport, operating regular schedules around the island (in both directions). So you can do as much or as little as you please.

Speed limit on our roads

Please be safe at all times when driving/riding on our roads, the speed limit for 2 wheel scooters is 40kph, and 50kph for cars and other vehicles. It is important to note that if any form of bike is ridden at over 40kph, then a crash helmet is required.

Driving

Driving is on the left hand side of the road and you are required to have a current Cook Islands Drivers Licence. These are available from the Police Station in Avarua on presentation of your own licence and cost NZ$20.00. You may be required to take a test. They make an excellent souvenir of your trip to the Cook Islands, and a very good revenue generator for us!!
